sorakh28-Professor Oak married the Ketchum brothers' aunt; as a result, they and Gary's mother Naomi are cousins.
~Making Gary and his older sister Daisy second cousins to Red, Leaf and Ash.
-Coming from a big family and taking inspiration from Japanese tradition, Gary's father married into the Oak family since he has a lot of siblings that can carry on the family name.
~This, of course, gets into his head big time a short while after Gary was born. This cause great friction between father and son.
~The friction comes to a head once Gary loses in the Indigo Conference... and Red catches them in an argument. Note to Gary's dad- do NOT piss off a Ketchum, it will end badly for you. (If you can't tell, I still don't have either an English or Japanese name for him.)
-Gary and Ash's rivalry is a Generation Xerox with Naomi and Mark, except the latters travelled in becoming Aura Guardians.
~Naomi then realized her skills in Aura aided her father greatly, thus she returned to Pallet Town to help rehabilitate distressed and injured Pokémon.
~A good portion of the 200 Pokémon Gary caught? In those exact situation. Poor Samuel and Naomi had to convince Gary to stop as they wouldn't be able to keep up, and once Ash catches wind of this? He retorts to "Ashy-boy" with "Softie Gary".
-The brothers both started out with Cleffa, and both are now Clefairy with no intention of evolving further.
~Rusty's Clefairy is named Avalon and the typical female, while Mark's Clefairy is male with the name Alm.
-The brothers also have Starter Pokémon. Mark has a Charizard like his son and nephew, while Rusty has a Venusaur like his daughter.
-Naomi did not started with a Kanto Starter- she started with a Johto one, her Meganium Magnolia.
-Both brothers are Aura Guardians working to keep the peace in the entire world. Because of this, neither sees their children very often... until the kids are on their journey, that is.
~Ash always seems to end up in the region where Mark is stationed- but the father is a firm believer that their crossing paths is merely the inevitable (xXxHolic's hitsuzen, basically).
-Rusty... has poor footwear sense? He's the type of guy caught wearing camo socks with gladiator sandals. That's how Red recognizes him.
-After getting chewed out by Red, Gary's dad tries to reconnect with his son to the best of his ability. While Ash is in the Orange Island, Gary receives his Eevee from his dad, who mentions he found the future Umbreon during his work travels.
~Once Gary decides he's gonna follow in his grandfather's footsteps and become a researcher, his father also realizes that all that really matters for him is that Gary's happy whatever path he chooses. By Sinnoh, the tension between the two is all but gone.
