Decided to start this off with a character who introduced me to an entire franchise and who I've been using as a muse since Fire Emblem Engage.
Like a good portion of people who played Melee when it first came out, I was absolutely intrigued by the Fire Embllem boys, Marth and Roy. Marth is my favorite Melee character to play as, and I was enamored by his fashion style. He wasn't like any other Nintendo character I've seen before.
It surprised me when I discovered about the failed OVA series. Watching it, I felt like it was giving me a glimpse into Marth's character, and his history as well. Also, I fell in love with Midorikawa Hikaru's performance as the prince, he really gave Marth a voice of porcelain- strong and beautiful, with an underlying fragility.
I kept tabs on the guy as he returned to Smash, got his game remade, but I don't think he really got even more interesting until Awakening and the Amiibo stuff for Fates and Code Name: Steam fleshed him out even more... and we were introduced to Yuri Lowenthal's performance as Marth.
While it was surprising that Marth was finally voiced in English, I was happy that it was Yuri that voiced him. I love his work, and his voice performance as Marth still keeps that porcelain quality I loved about Midorikawa's. And when Heroes came out and I get to hear more of both's Marth, I was one happy fangirl.
And then, Engage came out.
It's really strange, but for a game that's pretty much your typical shounen anime plot-wise, Engage revitalized my love for Marth. I fell in love with all of the Emblems, sure, but Emblem Marth suddenly grabbed my attention for how we get a look at who Marth is at his core. And his conversation with Emblem Sigurd after Lumera dies? Welp, that just started a new fanfic series.
Then,
sarajayechan posted a meme challenge where we would suggest a badfic style with certain pairings or characters, and I suggested Emblems Marth and Sigurd involving that one flashback scene in the OVAs written in a specific style...
...And that started the Break Me, Shake Me series, and it's sister To The Moon and Back. We're currently working on the Mystery part of TTM&B, A Reason For Living. We've been working on this for almost two years, and it's somewhat of a passion project for Sara and I so far! I have other Engage-base stories involving Emblem Marth, but right now, with all of my other projects in the works, it's on hiatus for the moment.
Marth isn't merely the very first Fire Emblem protagonist for me- he's a fuel of inspiration, a character who might seem basic at first glance, but full of potential storytelling if you're willing to dig deep. He's one of my favorite muses, and I hope to get even more Marth lore someday!
